The importance of the Îles-de-la-Paix

The whole of the islands extend over a length of about five kilometers and represent a major element of the aquatic landscape of this sector. There are several rare or endangered plant species on these virgin islands, four important spawning grounds for fish, as well as over 60 species of birds and small mammals.

The archipelago is one of the last natural wetlands in Lake Saint-Louis, and its importance both for its contribution to biological diversity and for its ability to filter water is well established. Finally, the archipelago is a natural wave breaker preventing the circulation of sediments containing mercury and other heavy metals.
